Great first day for the National Right to Life Convention!

I actually began my morning at Georgetown for a forum concerning religious freedom and the HHS mandate (a timely event indeed, the talk began within minutes of the Supreme Court’s announcement to uphold the health care law).  In particular, Representative  Jeff Fortenberry had some honest words of concern to share along with a clear sense of understanding about the issue. More than anything, all those present seemed bent on continuing to oppose government infringement upon our right to conscience and religious freedom, and they were outspoken about the many ways in which the Affordable Care Act is a step backwards for our nation and for freedom.

So it was with a somewhat heavy heart that I made my way to the convention. However, I was humbled and inspired by the undeterred enthusiasm displayed by the various speakers as well as those people in attendance. Lila Rose (President of Live Action), Sue Thayer, and others exuded a kind of calm fortitude which I have only ever seen in my life in people of great faith.

A major highlight for me, beyond the joy of meeting so many people of different faiths and backgrounds who work tirelessly to defend life, was a lecture on the trauma of abortion for would-be fathers which was given by Marriage and Family therapist Greg Hasek. He gave a clear and informative presentation which I believe provided a lot of insight into the cycle of abuse, trauma, and pain which influences how men behave when unplanned pregnancies occur. Mr. Hasek also covered the clinical and social details of how the role taken by the fathers often compounds the trauma of every abortion death.

As a last note, I especially encourage anyone living in Vermont or Massachusetts to get involved in the Doctor Prescribed Suicide issues which are developing or up for major debate in the near future – its not just the unborn who are endangered by the culture of death!
