On November 20th, Planned Parenthood launched their “Why Women Need #Feminism Campaign,” in which women shared the reasons that they believe they need feminism. This campaign, however, instead of focusing on reasons why women are strong, resilient, and beautiful reduced women to the sum of their body parts. Planned Parenthood functions on the reliance upon the myth that women are the sum of their reproductive organs and that they will not achieve full equality with men without contraception and abortion on demand. This impossible strategy, however, is defeatist in that it perpetuates the idea that women need institutions like Planned Parenthood to help achieve social equality.

Planned Parenthood wants women to believe that without abortion and contraception they will simply not be able to function in society. Without this myth, Planned Parenthood’s doors would close. The truth is that women deserve better than Planned Parenthood. They do not need feminism to reach social equality. Women are strong, they are more than their capacity to reproduce, and they certainly do not need feminism.
