Canadian father Robert Hoogland was arrested last week after he violated a court order to refrain from speaking publicly about his child’s transgender transition. The man’s teenage daughter reportedly identifies as male and is undergoing a transition with the support of her mother. However, Hoogland strongly opposes the judgment of his ex-wife and has been fighting to prevent his daughter from undergoing transgender therapy for several years. Unfortunately, his efforts proved unsuccessful as the Supreme Court of British Columbia ordered that the girl should receive testosterone injections without obtaining her father’s consent—or, indeed, parental consent in general.
The saga originally emerged when the girl began identifying as the opposite sex in seventh grade when she was just twelve years old. She then enrolled in ninth grade under a male name and, according to the court’s findings, commenced seeking “medical assistance to allow him to begin a physical transition to a boy,” and did so “with his mother’s help.”
She was then seen by Dr. Wallace Wong, a psychologist “experienced in treating children with gender dysphoria,” who provided the subsequent diagnosis and recommended that she receive “hormone treatment.” Hoogland was outraged and refused to consent to her transition on the grounds that she had serious mental health issues and was therefore not capable of making such a grave decision. Unfortunately, BC Children’s Hospital disagreed. After meeting with the fourteen-year-old, multiple health professionals concluded that she had “demonstrated capacity for informed consent regarding testosterone treatment” and recommended that she be given hormone therapy.
The girl’s father strongly opposed the decision and sought an “injunction to restrain the administration of testosterone injections, puberty-blocking drugs, and related medical and preparative interventions.” The Canadian court disagreed and ruled that the girl was “exclusively entitled to consent to medical treatment for gender dysphoria.” Stunningly, Justice Gregory Bowden added threateningly that “attempting to persuade (the girl) to abandon treatment for gender dysphoria; addressing (the girl) by his birth name; referring to (the girl) as a girl or with female pronouns whether to him directly or to third parties; shall be considered to be family violence under s. 38 of the Family Law Act.”
Hoogland was, of course, furious, and rebuked the court for violating his parental rights. Despite his valiant opposition, the British Columbia Court of Appeals ruled against him in January of 2020 stating that he must “acknowledge and refer to (his daughter) as male.” Additionally, the court ordered Hoogland to cease his attempts to change the girl’s mind and forced him to stop speaking publicly about her gender transition:
“a) CD shall be restrained from: i. attempting to persuade AB to abandon treatment for gender dysphoria; ii. addressing AB by his birth name; and iii. referring to AB as a girl or with female pronouns whether to AB directly or to third parties;
“b) CD shall not directly, or indirectly through an agent or third party, publish or share information or documentation relating to AB’s sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, mental or physical health, medical status or therapies.”
Of course, one should not expect a concerned father to refrain from attempting to stop a great evil from being visited upon his child. In defiance of the court’s order, Hoogland continued his efforts to raise awareness of his daughter’s plight by telling the Federalist that he “had a perfectly healthy child a year ago, and that perfectly healthy child has been altered and destroyed for absolutely no good reason.” Hoogland added that “She can never go back to being a girl in the healthy body that she should have had. She’s going to forever have a lower voice. She’ll forever have to shave because of facial hair. She won’t be able to have children… Sometimes I just want to scream so that other parents and people will… jump in, understand what’s going on. There’s a child—and not only mine but in my case, my child out there having her life ruined.”
The situation climaxed on March 4th of this year, when the court issued an arrest warrant for Hoogland who subsequently turned himself in on March 16th. Before being whisked away to jail for attempting to protect his own daughter, Hoogland told reporters, “Perhaps saving children is a dream . . . but I don’t think so! As I was driving, I saw children walking their dogs, I saw children playing together, and I saw a generation that needs their parents more than ever! I visited all my family homes… places where I grew up as a child. I remembered how much I loved my own parents and how much I needed their protection.” Sadly, Hoogland’s desperate pleas for sanity are done in vain, as Canada continues its sharp move to the far-left on social issues and evidently has no qualms about using the full power of the state to overrule parents and enforce extreme gender ideology on their citizens.
Even worse, Canada’s embrace of radical transgenderism is by no means an outlier in the Western world as this monstrous thinking has also found a welcoming home in Europe and the United States. For instance, Abigail Shrier, author of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters, finds that between 2016 and 2017, “the number of gender surgeries for natal females in the U.S. quadrupled with biological women suddenly accounting for…70 percent of all gender surgeries.” Meanwhile, in 2018, “the UK reported a 4,400 percent rise over the previous decade in teenage girls seeking gender treatments.”
This shocking explosion of transgenderism has come despite the fact that, before 2012, “there was no scientific literature on girls ages 11-21 ever having developed gender dysphoria.” Of course, such a confounding situation merits thorough scientific inquiry. One such investigation is cited in Shrier’s widely acclaimed book, which found that 65% of transgender girls had “discovered transgender identity in adolescence out of the blue.” Importantly, they “had done so after a period of prolonged social media immersion.” It appears, as Shrier notes, that “many of the adolescent girls suddenly identifying as transgender seemed to be caught in a “craze”—a cultural enthusiasm that spreads like a virus.”
Evidently, this emerging phenomenon can be explained by the new cultural context that has arisen out of the decline of Christian civilization and not by some previously unrecognized biological reality. Indeed, our new cultural elites are enthusiastically and successfully promoting transgenderism and other immoralities to young children and adolescents. Without serious resistance from social conservatives, this profoundly evil assault on our youth is likely to metastasize and the horrors of the Hoogland case will then be merely one of many terrible tragedies.
