Victory for Life and Religious Freedom!

| April 7, 2017

After almost fourteen months since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016, the Senate voted 54-45 to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch as the 113th Justice of the Supreme Court. This confirmation marks a victory for religious freedom and the Constitutional right to life!

Whatever one’s opinion of President Trump’s early days in office, all who support the Constitution, pro-life issues, and freedom of religion have cause for great celebration. Through the implementation of the Mexico City Policy, which ended U.S. international funding of abortion, to the confirmation of Judge Gorsuch, the Trump Administration has turned the tide in the fight for the protection of innocent lives.

Judge Gorsuch is known to interpret the Constitution as the Founding Fathers of the U.S. intended. He stated that the ‘intentional taking of human life by a private person is always wrong’, denoting his pro-life stance. Specifically questioned on issues like abortion or assisted suicide, Gorsuch consistently affirmed that there are no exceptions to the right to life. In addition, Gorsuch demonstrated his commitment to freedom of religion through his support in cases such as those involving the Little Sisters of the Poor and Hobby Lobby, where religious convictions on abortion and birth control were placed under attack.

This victory comes despite immense opposition from Senate Democrats and groups including Planned Parenthood, who resisted his confirmation due to his understanding that religious freedom and pro-life positions are inherent in the U.S. Constitution. President of Planned Parenthood, Cecile Richards stated in February: “there has never been a more important Supreme Court nomination. It has become crystal clear that the courts are going to be the last – and sometimes only – line of defense against dangerous and unconstitutional attacks on basic rights.” Richards was correct that this nomination was of high importance, and pro-life Americans can rejoice that the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch has strengthened the line of defense against attacks on our constitutional right to life and right to religious freedom.
