One of the most inspirational people in History, who made us fall in love with her magnificent example of service to humanity, was Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

She was an extraordinary person with an extraordinary purpose: “until love it hurts”. She was the founder of a Roman Catholic congregation called the “Missionaries of Charity”, which not only takes care of the poor, sick and helpless people of the world, but also those who are hungry and thirsty for love due to being shunned by many.

Nowadays, most religious people admire her not only because of her charitable work to help the poorest of the poor, but also because she was a living testimony of God through her ordinary work; introducing beauty in this world every single day. As everyone who got in touch with her said: “Mother Teresa always reserved a special place in her heart for all those who came near her.

Surely, following her footprints we could conclude that somehow she wanted to imitate Jesus, who came to us “to serve rather than to be served”, and even though in some cases she had no other resources than begging for food and supplies, she knew that God wanted her to be a free nun covered with the poverty of the cross. There is an awesome phrase that summarizes her mission in life:

“I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world”

Nevertheless, what was her message for us? The sweet answer was given to us when she received the Nobel Prize for her charitable work to overcome poverty and distress. In that moment she was asked what we could do to promote world peace. And she said: “Go home and love your family”.

Even though we may not be called to spend our lives in Calcutta as Mother Teresa did, we are called to make small things with great love. It is worth not to forget these words:

“What I do you cannot do; but what you do, I cannot do. The needs are great, and none of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.”
