Too often in society a woman expecting a disabled child will be pressured into getting an abortion. Such was the case 21 years ago in Utah when the parents of Eliza McIntosh were told to abort her. Their child would be born with spinal dysgenesis which would cause her to be paralyzed from the waist down. The doctors told her parents to abort her because she would have no quality of life and be what they called a “vegetable”. Thankfully, Eliza McIntosh’s parents are religious and against abortion. They knew that God blessed them with this child for a reason. They accepted her and made arrangements and changed their house to make it accessible for her. Eliza McIntosh says that her parents refused to let her waste her life. She also says that her parents taught her the difference between having a disability and being disabled.

Now, 21 years later McIntosh has recently won the title of Ms. Wheelchair America. She is also an action athlete in basketball and in 2011 she broke the Guinness World Record for the longest wheelie, over 12 miles. She says that her biggest inspiration is her parents, who encouraged her to follow her dreams. All this happened because 21 years ago two people chose to give their child a chance at life. Today, she still continues to inspire people and show that every life is important. See the link below for the full story.
