Recently, in france, a TV commercial was banned that featured children with Down’s syndrome having happy and productive lives. The reason stated was that the public showing of the ad would “likely disturb the consciences of women who had lawfully made different personal life choices.”
This begs the question, why must others be denied the joys of life due to someone else’s guilt? Also, if such a personal life choice was so lawful, why would these women be feeling disturbed by the activities of others?
For me, a ruling like this becomes personal. I am a person with a disability, more specifically, I am visually impaired. I am certain that there are people in the world who have chosen to terminate their pregnancy when they received a diagnosis that that their child might be blind. A statement by the court of this nature, can be said about anyone with a disability, or even any other demographic. Will all of our smiles be extinguished in the future as well?
