sexual and reproductive rights give freedom and empowerment to women and it is the only way they can achieve their goals, or at least, so we’ve all heard. this was a topic in a panel facilitated by Sweden during CSw59.
Forced marriage, the idea that women should have as many children as physically possible, abortion on demand and available contraception all appear to fall under that umbrealls term of reproductive rights. while the points regarding forced marriage, child marriage and the spacing of children are perfectly valid, I fail to see how abortion on demand and contraception really help to foster respect for women, especially when the teaching on chastity in this day and age is sorely lacking. With the amount of sexual education, young children are receiving in schools, it’s no surprise the amount of sexual activity that happens among young people. If you give someone the information to do something, theyre naturally going to want to find out how it works. Not to say that it should be completely swept under the rub either, but there needs to be a certain time and place for it with a certain balance. Add in the availability of all types of contraceptives imaginable which basically gives off the impression that sex comes with no consequences.
The catch just so happens to be that sex still comes with consequences. This is why we often hear of so many “unplanned pregnancies”. Things can happen even if we expect them not to and we are free to choose our decisions but this does not mean we’re always making the right choices. This is the need for abortion on demand, because of all these pregnancies. WE seem to have become so afraid of the unknown and the fact that something is going according to our plan. This is why so many children with disabilities get aborted, because they aren’t what the parents’ idea of their child should be. They simply don’t fit the proper description.
We all cherish freedom, but it is important that use our freedom to protect others and work for the greater good. Careless sex and contraception will not make men respect women more, neither does abortion on demand give better employment opportunities and acces to education, only the true discovery of our own identity and our God-given mission can achieve this
