The United Nations Human Rights Committee recently affirmed abortion as a human “right.” While the United Nations is seen as a legitimate institution by many in the international community, its affirmation of abortion as a human right is not a legitimate claim. The United Nations cannot just declare that abortion is a human “right,” and then believe that they have made it intrinsically so. They do not have the authority to do so.
We, as humans, are not the source of our rights. God, our loving, just and merciful Creator, is the source of our rights.
Pope Leo XIII wrote; “The State is bound to protect natural rights, not to destroy them.” While the United Nations is not a state, Pope Leo’s words are still applicable. It is not the United Nation’s job to dream up new moralities. It is the United Nation’s job to observe the moral law that has been set in place by our Creator.
The United Nation’s affirmation of abortion as a human “right” is unsettling and upsetting. It is an abuse of authority and a betrayal of human dignity.
But it can do nothing to erode the moral law that recognizes the dignity and beauty of human life.
