The majestic magi arrive at the manger with three gifts for Christ. After paying homage to the little one they journey home on a route avoiding Herod. Every December 28th is the feast day of the Holy Innocents. This past Monday was probably one of the less remembered and celebrated days during the Christmas season. In all fairness it is hard to forget the birth of Christ or the image of the three magi with their splendid gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh during the season of Christmas.
The feast day of the Holy Innocents should be more remembered. When the magi left without reporting the identity of the newborn King of the Jews, Herod massacred all the baby boys in Bethlehem. The massacre was his way to cling to power based on the fear he would lose it. He knew he was killing innocent lives but his desire for power trumped everything else.
You have to wonder about certain leaders today who support abortion and the killing of innocent lives. I’m not referring to those working for Planned Parenthood or those who work in other related abortion business. I’m thinking of those political, and social leaders who support Planned Parenthood and abortion. These people might very well believe in population control or a woman’s right to choose, and yet it is also true a person could have other reasons for supporting abortion.
Here’s my question: is it conceivable that some leaders back abortion because of the same fears and desires as Herod? Granted it is not as though someone like Obama is afraid that a newborn is destined to be the next president. However, power and control can be strong motivators and in some cases temptations to do terrible deeds. Herod fell susceptible to them centuries ago when he killed the Holy Innocents, and it could be happening now. The difference today is that the massacre being waged is against the unborn, and not in one city, but around the world. Instead of using soldiers to carry out orders, leaders today donate money to abortion businesses.
There are people who work so hard to become powerful and will do almost anything to get it. Clinging to power though is an illusion for any real power you have on Earth is because God allows you to have it. If all of mankind remembered their relation to God, deaths of the innocent would never occur. Abortion would not even be an option.
The Feast Day of the Holy Innocents is a great reminder that we should never let our own personal power or need to control get in the way of valuing all human life.
