#BeBoldAndEndHyde
One in four women seeking an abortion end up carrying the baby to term, and this is making Cecil Richards really mad. On October 8th, Cecil Richards tweeted “The Hyde Amendment forces 1 in 4 women seeking an abortion to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term.” In other words, one in four babies who were conceived in unfortunate circumstances are being born, and Cecil Richards thinks this is a shame.
The Hyde Amendment, which was passed in 1993 prohibits the use of federal funds to be used for abortion (with the exception of babies conceived in rape, incest, or if the woman suffers from a physical disorder or illness. (See https://www.congress.gov/amendment/103rd-congress/house-amendment/185 for more details.) This means that taxpayers, many of which who have moral reservations against abortion, do not have to partake in its funding.
As many know, Planned Parenthood is currently being investigated by 3 separate House committees for various illegal practices, and there is a good possibility that next budget will not include its funding. Planned Parenthood’s defense for keeping its government funding it is that taxpayer money does not go to abortion. Clearly their actions are not lining up with their words. It’s time that Planned Parenthood tell the truth. If they plead to keep themselves government funded on the basis of taxpayer money not going to abortion anyway, then they need to follow through.
The problem in the US is not the inaccessibility of abortion; more than 1.3 million abortions happen every year (OnlineForLife.org). When a woman becomes pregnant, there are two separate individuals involved, the baby and the mother; both of whom are equally valuable. Instead of ending the Hyde Amendment and providing women abortions through Medicaid, I propose that we empower low income women and their unborn children. Cecil Richards has told us to be bold, and I agree. But instead of “Being Bold And Supporting Hyde,” I propose that we be bold and love both the mother and the child.
